This hand painted wooden ornament is based on the unique motifs found at Akhtamar Church located in Lake Van in current day Turkey. The church was built in the 10th century during the reign of the Armenian King Gagik I Artstruni.
Akhtamar Church contains depictions of different themes including religious scenes, palace life, hunting figures, floral and geometric patterns and a variety of animals including the deer shown on this ornament.
The ornaments are produced at the Koghb Art School in Armenia by eight artisans from the local area.

After graduating from university in Yerevan, Anna Nasibyan returned to Koghb, a border village in the Tavush province in Armenia. She started to teach painting at a local art school and then founded the Yeregnuk Handicraft Group with Arusyak Pashikyan and Satenik Dulijanyan. The Group consists of eight core artisans.
